Suñol, Alvar
Alvar Suñol Muñoz-Ramos was born in Montgat in 1935. At the age of sixteen he entered the School of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi in Barcelona and at eighteen he obtained the Alhambra Scholarship of Granada, which allowed him to study in Granada and travel around Andalusia and Castile. This trip was transcendental in his artistic career, as it influenced the development of his first works, characterized for their realism.
In 1954 he won first place in the Young Painters Award as well as in the Acquisition Prize at the Annual Exhibition of Fine Arts, both organized by Barcelona's City Council.
In 1956 he held his first individual exhibition at the Layetana Galleries in Barcelona, leading him to receive several invitations to exhibit in different Spanish cities.
In 1957 he presented an oil painting to the Annual Painting Contest organized by the Fracés Institute of Barcelona and won the First Prize.
In 1959 he exhibited at the Garden Gallery in Barcelona, while participating in the III Biennial of Alexandria, in Beyruth, obtaining the Medal \"Painting Contribution\" and participating in the September Salon in Sitges.
In 1959 Sueñol arrived in Paris with a scholarship from the French Institute of Barcelona. After a short time the prestigious Galerie Drouant bought the complete series of his first works made in Paris. In just one week the Gallery sold all the paintings. That sudden success marked the beginning of the international projection of his work.
In 1960 he officially settled in Paris, where he lived until 1975. A year later Jacques Lassaige, prestigious art critic and curator of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, invited him to join the group of l'École de Paris, and to participate in the exhibitions that the aforementioned group held annually at the Galerie Charpentier. As a result, in the following years, he went on to exhibit in France and other European countries.
In 1962 he exhibited for the first time in New York and other American cities.
In 1963 he produced his first original lithographs for a solo exhibition at the Galerie Drouant in Paris, with whom he signed an exclusive contract. Since then he exhibited regularly in Europe and the United States.
He continues to exhibit frequently in the United States, country in which he is most successful. He is currently working on a series of large-scale religious paintings for the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas.
